Milk from the region: FPÖ demands support for our farmers!

Oberösterreich, Österreich - On May 28, 2025, the preparations for the upcoming World Milk Day on June 1st are the focus. The FPÖ Oberösterreich emphasizes on the occasion of this day the importance of milk production for local Agriculture. Dr. Manfred Haimbuchner, state party chairman, and DI Dr. Arthur Kroismayr, chairman of the Freedom Peasants Upper Austria, clearly commented on the role of milk as not only a staple, but also as a "piece of home".

Haimbuchner emphasized that the farmers do a lot under difficult conditions to create high -quality dairy products. The need to increase the appreciation for the farmers, guarantee fair prices and reduce bureaucratic hurdles was clearly addressed. Political attitudes against the over -regulation from Brussels and the dominance of industrial agricultural groups should be put into the foreground. This underlines the challenges with which the dairy farmers are faced.

challenges of milk price design

The milk prices are heavily dependent on the global market conditions, which often leads to existential problems for farmers. According to the BUND , many companies had to find out in 2015 and 2016 that they could not cover the production costs of 30 to 60 cents per liter. In extreme cases, this led to losses of up to 1,000 euros per cow. Despite this crisis situation, agricultural policy remains unchanged, which exerts further pressure on dairy farms.

The price structure is increasingly determined by external market conditions, which is in contrast to real operating costs. The federal government therefore calls for control of the milk market according to regional needs and not for export strategies to ensure the existence of the companies.

milk production in Germany

The importance of milk production also becomes clear in Germany, where it represents the most important branch of agriculture. According to the BMEL , around 57,000 companies generated a total of 33.1 million tons of milk with 3.9 million animals. This industry is a central cornerstone of the German nutrition industry and contributes significantly to economic stability. The average milk yield per cow is around 8,457 kg annually.

The structural change in the milk market manifests itself through falling numbers of dairy farms, while the number of dairy cows increases per holder. This trend is enormously influenced by political framework conditions such as reforms of common agricultural policy (GAP) and the exit from the milk quota 2015.

claims for the future

The FPÖ Upper Austria is committed to a clear political backing for farmers who are necessary to not only stabilize regional agriculture, but also to preserve the cultural landscape. At the same time, Kroismayr demands that the use for mandatory identification of origin and fair trade practices must contribute to better appreciation of dairy products. This should be done through a fair pricing policy in the trade to support the farmers 365 days a year.

The challenges in the milk sector are diverse, from price uncertainties to market conditions. A rethinking is necessary to guarantee sovereignty through independent agriculture and to supply the regions sustainably.
