Mexico's mobile phone providers bundle forces for digital innovation!

Mexiko - On May 29, 2025, the mobile operators Altán Redes, América Móvil, AT & T Mexico and Telefónica Mexico announced the local introduction of the GSMA Open Gateway Initiative. This significant announcement took place during the GSMA M360 Latam and is all about a global initiative to open mobile networks for innovation and cooperation. The aim of the initiative is to enable mobile phone operators to provide developers access to network functions and to promote the development of digital products that work across platforms.

The GSMA Open Gateway Initiative offers access to various application programming interfaces (APIS) that provide information about network capacities. This expands the possibilities for developers and is intended to speed up the innovations. The first phase of the initiative focuses on APIs, which in particular support digital security.

API offers and their functions

The APIs introduced in Mexico are:

  • Sim Swap: Checking the exchange of SIM cards.
  • device location: Information about the location of a device.
  • number check: Checking the connection of a telephone number to a specific device.

These functions help to recognize and prevent fraud in payments and financial transactions. Since the start of the initiative at the MWC Barcelona 2023, over 73 mobile operator groups and 43 sales partners have joined the 284 mobile phone networks and almost 80 % of global mobile phone connections. Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru have already introduced their first API portfolio in Latin America, and other markets are to follow by 2025.

new business models through open networks

Alfons Lösing, Chief Partner & Wholesale Officer from O2 Telefónica, emphasizes the importance of Open Gateway for the development of new business models. Standardized network APIs should give partners and app developers the opportunity to develop innovative services for private and business customers. This is also supported by the participation of other prominent providers such as Vodafone who promote open standards in the developer community.

The opening of the network is intended to promote new, customizable API innovations in order to counteract the challenges of online security and fraud. Henry Calvert, Head of Networks at GSMA, emphasizes that the initiative is crucial to improve security in digital space. In Germany, the GSMA Open Gate Way E-Ecosystem is to be expanded by new partners such as Microsoft Azure.

relevance of open source in the mobile phone industry

The improvement of security and resilience in the use of open source software is essential for companies and authorities. The professional open source management system (OSS) is increasingly considered necessary in order to minimize security risks and meet regulatory requirements. According to current trends, professionalism in dealing with open source is crucial in terms of transparency, compliance and security.

However, there are significant differences in the implementation of governance structures and the use of analysis tools for the identification of weaknesses. Only about a third of the companies check their open source software, while many organizations still rely on manual exams. This illustrates the need for action in the area of security and compliance in the entire industry.
