Knife attack at the main station: 18 injured, 4 in mortal danger!
On Friday, May 24, 2025, a terrifying incident occurred at the Hamburg Central Station. A 39-year-old woman, who is probably mentally ill, carried out an attack on the platform between track 13 and 14 with a knife. As a result of this attack, 18 people were injured, including four who are in a life -threatening condition. The injured are enough at the age of 19 to 85. The most serious injuries include that of a 24-year-old woman, a 52-year-old woman, an 85-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man whose health is currently critical. The police have no evidence of a political motive and recognizes the mental illness of the suspects as a central factor. The exact course of the crime is currently being reconstructed.
When the police arrived, the perpetrator had her resistant arrested. Two brave passersby were able to stop the attack beforehand and possibly prevent worse. A total of around 350 police officers, 60 officials from the federal police and 50 forces from the fire brigade and emergency services were mobilized as part of the mission. The tracks were released for train traffic again in the night after the crime, which underlines the importance of the main train station as a transitive hub for over 500,000 people every day.
reactions and support
The incident triggered horror in Hamburg and beyond. Mayor Peter Tschentscher and other politicians were shocked by the crime. Chancellor Friedrich Merz offered his support on behalf of the federal government, while the union of the police demands better control options and the use of artificial intelligence to monitor behavior. The Hamburg sacrificial representative has offered help for the injured and their relatives, and the police set up a witness for witnesses. It is expected that the alleged perpetrator will be shown to a judge on Saturday, whereby a preliminary briefing in a forensic-therapeutic center is to be requested.
An important question related to this incident is the role of mental illnesses in society. In Germany, every fourth adult fulfills the criteria for mental illness over the course of a year. Preval faults include anxiety disorders, depression and disorders from alcohol or medication use, which underlines the need for better treatment and prevention. The German Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Psychosomatics and Nerve Healing (DGPPN) indicates that around 18 million people in Germany suffer from mental illnesses, which results in significant social and professional restrictions. The treatment options for those affected include psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions.
