Their open and warm being attracted many people, but their perfectionism and their stubbornness sometimes burdened them.
Maria fought against the insidious illness three times and was twice victorious. Her third and last fight ended in Singapore, just five days before her 13th birthday. It is important to understand that children perceive the death of a close person emotionally, regardless of their age. Adults often believe that children do not mourn or do not understand the situation, but the loss has profound effects on their daily life. Children are also sensitive to changes in themselves and in their environment. Support for grieving children begins with the serious perception of their feelings and their life situation. Children need care and affection to deal with their loss, soIt is important that the social environment is informed about death in order to offer adequate support. Mourners need time and space to mourn, even over longer periods. Support by grief companions or self -help groups can also be an advantage to make it easier to deal with grief.
Maria will live on in the memories of her family, and her story reminds us of how important it is to take grief seriously and offer support, be it through personal contacts or special events for mourners.
