Magnus Brunner: The new Vice President of the EVP and his challenges!
Österreich - On April 30, 2025, Magnus Brunner was elected Vice President of the European People's Party (EPP). This decision was welcomed by Chancellor Christian Stocker, who praised Brunner as an experienced European who is willing to take responsibility. In times of challenges such as the war in Ukraine and a changed transatlantic relationship, it is crucial that Brunner is at the head of the EVP. Manfred Weber received confirmation as party president with an impressive result, which underlines the stability of the EVP.
European ninner Claudia Plakolm highlights the important role of Brunner for Austria when designing the European agenda. According to her, collaboration and cohesion in Europe is essential to meet the current political challenges. Brunner is known for his political style, which is characterized by the promotion of constructive solutions and a factual discourse, which is of great importance in the current political landscape.
Brunner as EU Commissioner for the Interior and Migration
In addition to his role in the EPP, Magnus Brunner was nominated by Ursula von der Leyen as the next EU Commissioner for the Interior and Migration. His tasks will include the implementation of the pact via asylum and migration as well as the strengthening of the external borders of the EU. The development of a new internal security strategy is also on its agenda. In this function, Brunner will encounter political resistance in several EU member states, especially with regard to the reform of EU asylum and migration policy. For example, the Dutch government has requested its opt-out of certain legal provisions, which leads to tensions within the Union.Another important topic that Brunner has to clarify is the Schengen membership of Bulgaria and Romania. Although the Commission sees their fulfillment as given, this is blocked by the Austrian federal government. This situation illustrates the difficulties that the EU has to cope with in migration policy. Brunner is referred to as a "professional", which is ideally suited for the key department of migration, says ÖVP delegation manager Reinhold Lopatka, while the FPÖ criticized the decision as a "cabinet of political horror".
migration in Europe: a complex challenge
The challenges in European migration policy are not new. As the study "Europe as a goal? The future of global migration" shows, migration and asylum are central issues in the EU. Although Europe is not always the main goal in perception potential migrants, humanitarian hikes and other reasons continue to play an important role in the migration movement. Globalization has increased people's mobility and the EU is faced with the challenge of rethinking its framework conditions in order to counter the demographic changes.
According to a Gallup survey, around 750 million people worldwide can imagine moving to another country, which corresponds to 15 % of the adult world population. The main goals for migrants are the USA, followed by European countries such as Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Despite these figures, 53 % of EU citizens are skeptical about immigration from non-EU countries.
There is no question that Magnus Brunner will play a crucial role in his new function in the EU Committee and as Vice President of the EVP. The upcoming challenges in migration and asylum policy require close cooperation and a new approach to meet the requirements of today.
