Lithuania complains Belarus: Migration Living as a political game at risk!
In the past few weeks, lithuania has increasingly acted against the mechanisms of the Belarusian government to organize migration currents. According to report the Kleine Zeitung have collected evidence that a direct participation of the Belarussian regimes Occupy migration. In particular, this can be observed by an increased number of flights from the Middle East and a coordinated award of Visa and the accommodation of migrants. Lithuania accuses Belarus of violating international guidelines, including the united nations for cross -border organized crime.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to bring the case to the International Court of Justice. Minister of Justice Rimantas Mockus illustrated the position of the Lithuanian government by declaring that people in need of protection should not be used as political chess figures without the causal state consequences.
The situation on the border
The tensions between Lithuania and Belarus have intensified in particular since late summer and autumn 2021. During this time, thousands of migrants tried to illegally reach the European Union. According to Lithuanian border protection, this situation led to the fact that more than 23,000 people have now been prevented from crossing the border to Lithuania irregularly. The Lithuanian government reacted to this by strengthening border protection and building a border fence.
A central point of Lithuanian criticism is that Belarusian security forces escorted many migrants to the border and forced them to illegally cross, often under dangerous conditions. So far there has been no official reaction to these serious allegations on the part of Belarus.
financial and political consequences
The Lithuanian government also plans to request compensation for the costs incurred in connection with these migration currents. This measure could further heat up the political tensions between the two countries and rekindle the debate about migration policy within the EU.
Developments in this matter are not only important at the bilateral level between Lithuania and Belarus. They also play a role in the larger context of European asylum and migration policy, especially with regard to the reactions of the EU to the challenges that arise from migration from crisis regions.
