Linz starts ninth country power for cruise ships!

Obere Donaulände, 4020 Linz, Österreich - The Linz AG recently put on its ninth Landstrom-Anlage for Donau-Kreuzfahrschife. The new facility is located on the upper Danube region near the Linz Nibelungenbrücke. Each jetty can supply two ships in parallel, which represents an important expansion of the existing supply network.

A total of six country current systems are already available in Linz, while three other plants are operated in Engelhartszell. This infrastructure has been in operation since April 2024 and is used by 45 ship operators for 189 cabin ships. The connection rate of the ship operator is almost 100 percent. This means that the ships are not dependent on diesel unit during their stay, which leads to a significant reduction in noise and air pollutants.

sustainability initiative in Upper Austria

The project for the equipment of the investors with country power is a joint initiative of the state of Upper Austria, the city of Linz and Linz AG. The aim is to end the power supply through diesel unit to reduce the environmental impact. A total of ten jetty - seven in Linz and three in Engelhartszell - are equipped with country streams. The investment volume for this project is 5.8 million euros. The construction work in Engelhartszell started in the first half of 2023, while the construction in Linz is imminent after extensive plans have been completed, such as the city Media -effective .

The introduction of country power has already led to 1,700 connection processes and enables the savings of 3,785 tons of CO2, 41 tons of nitrogen oxides and 0.9 tons of fine dust. These measures are part of a broader strategy to improve air quality in the port area, which is also required by the EU as part of the FIT-FOR 55 initiative. This initiative obliges large ports by 2030 to implement land power infrastructures.

future prospects and global standards

The importance of country current to reduce emissions and noise pollution is undeniable. The cruise companies of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) have committed themselves to using country power when it is available. By 2028, over 210 ships of the Clia fleet are to be land-electric, which covers around 72 % of the fleet and 74 % of the global passenger capacity. This underlines the growing efficiency and sustainability in shipping.

The International Sea Shipping Organization (IMO) has published guidelines for the safe operation of land power supply systems (OPS) in order to promote implementation. In addition to financial incentives, international standards are also crucial for the implementation of such infrastructures. The developments in battery technology and the integration of electrical and hybrid vehicles into shipping will also contribute significantly to reduce local emissions and noise pollution, as well as to Cruising Journal described in detail.
