Linz sets a sign: Electricity cost brake extended by the end of March 2025!

The city of Linz and Linz AG set a strong sign for socially disadvantaged households: by March 31, 2025, the voluntary electricity cost brake remains active to support people in financial emergencies during the cold season. "We have to offer targeted support, especially in times of increasing stress," explains Dietmar Prammer, Vice Mayor of the City of Linz. The Initiative is intended to help people overcome the fear of energy shutdowns by granting a grant of 10 cents per kilowatt hour for a basic quota of up to 2,900 kilowatt hours. Applications for this support can be submitted personally or by email, whereby a valid social welfare decision serves as proof, as Meinzirk.at reported.

Important details about the electricity cost brake

The electricity cost brake is aimed at households with an active electricity delivery contract. It enables a grant for the basic quota of 2,900 kWh, which corresponds to about 80 percent of average electricity consumption in Austria. The support amount is at the preliminary crisis: From a price of 10 cents per kWh, the measure takes effect and supports households up to an upper threshold of 25 cents per kWh from July 2024. This means a maximum grant of 15 cents per kWh, as Linzag.at explains. The Linz women who are currently experiencing financial difficulties benefit from this form of support, and thus receive fundamental relief.

This initiative is not only a contribution to social justice, but also shows the responsibility of the city of Linz and Linz AG towards its citizens. Vice mayor Karin Hörzing emphasizes the importance of the electricity cost brake as an important sign of solidarity at the beginning of the year. The measure aims to maintain the protection against energy shutdowns for needy households offered by the company until the beginning of spring.
