Liesing in the fast lane: U2 extension and new traffic projects!
In the Liesing district of Vienna, there is a significant change in public transport. A proposal to extend the U2 subway line to the Liesing station is on the table in order to meet the increasing requirements due to the growing population. The district head Gerald Bishop (SPÖ) received 45% of the votes in a recent election, which is an improvement compared to 2015 and a new confirmation of his office. Despite this positive development, the absolute majority has not been achieved since 2010. Additional challenges arise for the citizens who primarily want a better connection to public transport, since Liesing is known as a driver district with the most car per capita.
Liesing is described as a rapidly growing district with numerous planned construction projects, such as the new Mauglgasse city district, which is to be built by 2027 and includes 1850 apartments and a 6000 m² park. However, the connection to public transport must be improved in order to take into account the concerns of the citizens after receiving the village character and lively Grätel centers.public transport connection and plans for the expansion
The planned U2 extension will not only change the liesing, but also the surroundings. This measure is part of a larger expansion of the U2, which will be led to the seaside city in the future. In the second construction stage, the U2 is extended to Gußriegelstraße and further to the Wienerberg. Stops are planned at important points such as Rathaus, Neubaugasse and Pilgramgasse, which enable the uplets to other subway lines. Around 15,000 people in the catchment area of the new stations will benefit from this improved connection, which should also relieve tram line 2 and bus 48a at the Rathaus station.
Green plans to expand the Vienna Transport Network
In addition to the subway plans, the Viennese Greens recently presented their own proposal for the expansion of the public network. A third more trams are to be set up over a period of ten years, including 17 new tram lines and the extension of existing lines. This extensive project has an estimated construction costs of 1.7 to 2 billion euros and could help reduce the proportion of car trips in Vienna from the current 26 to 27% to 15% by 2030. The focus is on the outdoor districts, where a better connection via new tram lines and changes is sought.Another goal is the introduction of a 365 euro annual ticket until 2030, without a price increase to make public transport even more attractive. By means of innovative traffic concepts and the planned “green wave” for bus and train, time savings for passengers are to be created.
Overall, the expansion of public transport in Liesing and all of Vienna is considered crucial for the future development of the transport network. The upcoming construction projects and initiatives could help to significantly increase the quality of life for the citizens and to reduce the environmental impact on individualized traffic.
