Lieferando Revolution: Social plan of 97% accepted!
Lieferando Revolution: Social plan of 97% accepted!
On May 20, 2025, the deadline for the consent of the social plan at Lieferando ended, and the results are clear: 97 percent of the drivers employed approved the plan. This usheres in an important restructuring process in the company, which also affects the future of around 650 drivers and 50 office workers. Lieferando plans to switch its employees to a model of free employees, similar to how it has already been practiced by competitors such as Foodora and Wolt. This change is supported with a social plan of 1.7 million euros, which also includes a hardship fund of 400,000 euros.
The social plan provides for voluntary severance payments for the office opera. Some of the employees concerned will leave the company until August 2025, in particular the employees with long notice periods. It is currently reported that the need for delivery drivers should increase by 35 to 50 percent. A quarter of the order volume is already covered by the new model of the free employees, and the company is currently looking for such deliverers in cities such as Graz, Klagenfurt, Linz, Innsbruck and Salzburg.
economic pressure and criticism
This far -reaching decision is made against the background of economic pressure, which Lieferando has been exposed to for some time. The switch to free employees is critically observed from various sides. Unions, the Chamber of Labor, the SPÖ and the Greens have vehemently protested the job cuts and mobilized in April for demonstrations of food deliverers in Vienna.
The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Korinna Schumann announced that the EU platform work guideline quickly implement and wants to create a legal set of rules that improves working conditions in platform work. In the government program, the creation of a legal framework for platform work is explicitly mentioned. In Austria, there has been a collective agreement for bicycle deliverers since the beginning of 2020, but has not experienced an increase since early 2023. The monthly gross income for bicycle messengers is 1,730 euros, which corresponds to 1,440 euros.
conclusion and outlook
The step of Lieferando is a significant signal for the future of platform work in Austria. The comprehensive changes that are due to the loss of a large part of the employed driver and the introduction of free employees could have far -reaching effects on the working conditions and the income of the employees concerned. While the company is implementing its new strategy, it remains to be seen how the Situation will develop for the former employees and whether the announced legal adjustments will actually become a reality.
