Art scene in mourning: Viennese gallery owner Ernst Hilger died with 75
Ernst Hilger, a well -known Viennese gallery owner and art dealer, died surprisingly at the age of 75. His death was confirmed on Monday evening in Vienna, both by the "Kurier" and by his gallery, who mourn the loss of one of the most influential personalities in domestic art trade. Hilger shaped the Austrian art scene for more than 50 years and was most recently active at art fairs.
born on February 28, 1950 in Vienna, Hilger showed a creative streak early on. Originally he wanted to become a singer or poet, but then decided to study business administration that he started in 1968. He left the first traces in the art area with the founding of the Folk Local Atlantis before founding the Academia Gallery in Salzburg in 1971. Just a year later, the opening of the Spectrum gallery in Vienna followed and in 1976 its own gallery in Dorotheergasse, where over 500 exhibitions took place.
an impressive portfolio
Hilger was known for his versatile activities. From 2003 he ran Hilger Contemporary, followed by the Hilgerbrotkunsthalle in 2009 and 2013 the opening of Hilgernext. His galleries stretched over Vienna, Salzburg, Frankfurt and Paris. Under his aegis, the galleries took part in renowned international art fairs, such as Art Basel. He was not only active as a gallery owner, but also as President of the Association of the Austrian Galleries and from 2002 to 2007 President of the European Gallery List Association.
In recent years, Hilger has commented on the tense situation at the art market, where he noted that all galleries had to fight. Despite the challenges, however, he looked back to 50 “sensational years” in the art world. In 2008 he was awarded the Golden Medal of Vienna for his services and had been the title of a professor since 2000.
a lasting inheritance
Hilger not only left many positive impressions in the art scene, but also an important legacy. He donated around 500 work from his personal art collection to the Musa, and a selection of his collection was seen in the Angerlehner Museum in Upper Austria in 2018. Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig reacted with dismay to Hilger's death and paid tribute to the great influence he had on the art scene.
at a time when art comprises more than just aesthetic and socially critical topics, Hilger's remarkable career remains part of the connecting history within the Austrian and international art scene. Even if the art markets are challenging, according to experts, the art trade still offers fascinating opportunities for discoveries and commitment, as eberhard-bitter.de describes.
