Artificial intelligence in the public service: a revolutionary change!
The focus is on artificial intelligence (AI) and digitization for the current budget consultations for 2025 and 2026 in the Federal Chancellery. The budget draft provides for the Federal Chancellery 626 million euros in 2025 and 549 million euros in 2026, with a budget reduction of EUR 334.6 million compared to the previous year. These savings are to be achieved by shifting tasks between the departments and by a decline in the positions, such as bmds.bund.de , the central control of the IT of the federal government is used to dissolve blockages and to achieve quick successes.
As part of a study by the Fraunhofer IAO, the relevance of AI was examined in public administration. Workshops were carried out at ten municipalities and regional associations, whereby concrete applications such as chatbots, service robots and safe methods for identity management were in focus. These technologies are intended to revolutionize the administrative processes and benefit both the employees and the citizens. A central result of the study are recommendations for action for the combination of human and artificial intelligence. iao.fraunhofer.de notes that there are various future scenarios, including the possibility of a public sector dominated by AI
budget distribution and measures for consolidation
The budget consultations also provide for a distribution of tasks: media and women agents are assigned to other ministries, while digitization and public services are emphasized. In addition, fewer funds for integration and party funding are calculated, since the funding for the EU election is no longer necessary. The culture and ethnic group resources decrease, with a target of 79.8 million euros in 2025.
One of the main priorities for the Federal Chancellery is to take over the communication agent internally and to realize public relations of 1.56 million euros in 2025 and 2026. In order to master these challenges, salary negotiations for autumn are in prospect of creating a financial cushion for the coming years. Overall, the budget shows 983 positions for the years 2025 and 2026, whereby the digital transformation has a clear priority.
