On May 22, 2025, the Literature Museum of the Austrian National Library celebrates its tenth birthday with a special event: admission is free all day. This campaign is intended to encourage visitors to discover the diverse facets of Austrian literature. Since its opening, over 650 exhibits of around 200 Austrian authors have been presented in the museum. The highlights include 60 audio and video stations that offer visitors an interactive experience. The literary museum describes ÖNB director Johanna Rachinger as a "dynamic place of encountering Austrian literature" and emphasizes its goal of making the literary legacy visible, audible and tangible for all generations.
Bernhard Fetz, director of the literary museum and the literary archive, emphasizes the desire to literature and the sensual qualities of the language. The permanent exhibition of the museum extends over two floors and is devoted to the diversity and the polyphony of Austrian literature from late 18th century to the present. On the third level, changing special exhibitions can be seen, of which the show "where we come from. Literature and origin" can be visited.

The literary museum is located in the historical rooms of the former k. k. Court chamber archive, which was built in 1848. This unique environment also houses the original study by Franz Grillparzer, which was archive director until 1856. With a total area of 730 m², the museum offers an impressive backdrop for the presentation of numerous original sources. The most famous Austrian authors who are represented in the museum include personalities such as Johann Nestroy, Arthur Schnitzler, Franz Kafka, Ilse Aichinger and Ingeborg Bachmann.
Visitors can look forward to a comprehensive presentation through numerous media stations that shed light on literary history from the present to the past. The ground floor is designed for readings and events and offers an additional space for cultural encounters.

The normal prices for admission are 9 euros, while reduced tickets are available for 7.50 euros. Owner of the Vienna City Card can use an advantage of 17%. The museum is accessible to accessible, with a lift to the main entrance and special facilities for people with disabilities. Guided tours for visitors with special needs are offered on request.
