Free parking for Wiener Busse: This is how Schwedenplatz is relieved!
Free parking for Wiener Busse: This is how Schwedenplatz is relieved!
In Vienna, a new traffic pilot project was launched, which runs from June to September 2025. This should improve the traffic situation on Schwedenplatz and counteract the coach chaos in particular. oe24.at reports that Wiener bus companies can almost free to park their vehicles in a defined zone on Schwedenplatz. The aim is to relieve downtown traffic and to avoid traffic jams with entry and exit zones.
As part of the project, the first 15 minutes of parking can be used at the designated stops at the Franz-Josefs-Kai or the ring tower at no cost. A regular tariff of five euros is calculated for the next quarter of an hour, but which will be borne by the specialist group, if it is buses with Viennese license plates. This regulation is particularly important for city tours and day trips.
new waiting places for coaches
The pilot project gives the bus companies the opportunity to use new waiting places to minimize traffic disabilities when getting in and out. A special entry and exit zone is available for up to five coaches at Schwedenplatz for up to five coaches, but no longer await buses. In order to support these changes, the specialist group of car company companies and the specialist group of the tourist guides have made an agreement.
In addition, the buses can also be parked for free at the parking lot at the Reichsbrücke for up to three hours, this under the same conditions. After the maximum parking time, the buses can drive to a pulling station to ensure that no parking spaces are blocked. These pull-up places are located on bus bays, so-called "sawtooth parking spaces", as well as at inclined parking spaces at the bus parking lot at the Franz-Josefs-Kai.
pilot project as a test run
The driver registration is made via the APCOA Flow app, which enables a seven-digit registration code to be obtained. This code is a prerequisite for the use of the pulling places, which in turn can only be used by the specialist group after activation. Expert voices from the traffic planning, as on stadttraum.com, emphasize the need to integrate the needs of all road users into planning.
The goals of this pilot project and the accompanying planning steps could possibly also bring long -term positive changes for traffic in the city center of Vienna. In the event of a positive course, an expansion of the project is considered. The importance of efficient traffic sequences and functioning waiting places as a part of modern urban mobility should therefore not be underestimated.
