Korosec congratulates Bogner-Strauß: Fighter for women's rights remains!

Österreich - On May 19, 2025, Ingrid Korosec, President of the ÖVP Seniors, Juliane Bogner-Strauß congratulated on the re-election as the Federal Leader of the ÖVP women. The re-election took place on Saturday, May 17th, during the 23rd ordinary Bundestag of the ÖVP women, where Bogner-Strauß received impressive 97.2 % of the delegate votes. Korosec emphasized the great importance of Bogner-Strauß ’work for the concerns of women in all age groups, especially for the older generation. The fight against poverty in old age is the focus of the joint efforts of the ÖVP Seniors and Bogner-Strauß.

Korosec at the same time called for more courage and self -confidence for women in different stages of life. She emphasized that women make decisive contributions to society, despite the continuing challenges in the field of equality. In this context, she wished Bogner-Strauß a lot of strength and success in her future tasks.

challenges for women in politics

The election process and the subsequent re-election of Bogner-Strauß is also a reflection of the ongoing challenges that women face in politics. Although Austria was one of the first European countries in 1918 that introduced the active and passive right to vote for women, women are still underrepresented in political decision -making positions today. This affects both the two chambers of the parliament and the 9 state parliament, where there is no balanced gender ratio.

The picture shows even more clearly in the municipal elections: only around every tenth community in Austria is led by a mayor. In order to achieve an adequate representation of women in political committees, the United Nations already set themselves the goal of reaching a women's share of 30 percent in governments and parties in 1990, which has not yet been implemented across the board.

strategies for improving representation

A step in the right direction was the introduction of internal quota regulations for some Austrian parties for optional lists as well as for mandates and functions to be filled. Despite this progress, there are no clear legal regulations for women's quota compared to countries such as France, Belgium or Portugal. The report on the representation of women in political decision -making positions is published annually and offers valuable insights into the development of these topics at various levels, from the municipality to the EU.

In 2019, a financial bonus was also introduced to increase the proportion of women in parliamentary clubs. If the proportion of women is over 40 percent, club funding increases by 3 percent. In the long term, these incentives could help promote equality of gender in the political landscape of Austria.

Overall, it remains crucial that women continue to be heard and are strengthened in management positions in order to ensure the democratic representation of the entire population. The challenges are diverse, but the use of personalities such as Juliane Bogner-Strauß and Ingrid Korosec are crucial to bring about positive change.
