Coalition decision in Vienna: Emmerling becomes Vice Mayor!

On May 31, 2025, there are important political decisions in Vienna, which affect future cooperation between the SPÖ and the NEOS. According to the Kleine Zeitung , the new coalition will be presented in the coat of arms of the town hall next Tuesday. The two parties have agreed on a new edition of their cooperation and will present the content of this cooperation.

A central concern of this coalition is the nomination of Bettina Emmerling to the mayor. Emmerling, who will be responsible for the educational department, has emerged through her many years of work as an education spokeswoman and club chairwoman of the Wiener Neos. Christoph Return, the NEOS state spokesman and Minister of Education, said that Emmerling attaches great importance to the best possible education and already ran in second place on the NEOS list during the Vienna election, where she often appeared as a front woman. coalition details and political perspectives

In recent years, SPÖ and NEOS, which have been ruling together since 2020, have followed a stable course. In the past Vienna election on April 27, 2025, both parties increased slightly, with the SPÖ just under 40% and the NEOs received over 10% of the votes. Despite a loss of seats of three mandates for the SPÖ, Neos was able to win two seats, which continues to put their cooperation on a solid basis. Together they have a total of 53 out of 100 mandates in the local council, which underlines their ability to act in urban politics. This information can be found in an article on SN

The convening of a NEOS state meeting is scheduled for the Pentecost weekend, presumably next Saturday. This meeting will be decisive because the NEOS will then have to vote on the coalition package on June 7th. The SPÖ bodies, which are responsible for the approval of the package, should agree until Wednesday at the latest, which means that the city government members have to be promptly established. However, the exact figures for the new city government are not yet known, and it remains to be seen which other members are elected to the city senate.
