Klimabonus is abolished - so secure up to 1,010 euros!

Österreich - Austria faces changes in climate and environmental policy, since the climate monus is to be abolished in autumn 2025. Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer recently confirmed this decision in his budget speech. Hundreds of thousands of people are still entitled to the climate bonus, which serves as a compensation for the additional costs caused by the CO2 price and has been paid out annually since 2022. The climate bonus from 2022 and 2023 can be requested by the end of 2027 and three years after the end of the respective calendar year.

Currently up to 1,010 euros are waiting for some beneficiaries who have not yet received their bonus due to moves or missing account details. Around 144,000 returns are recorded of the 2024 climate bonus paid. Among them are about 12,000 cases in which the recipients were no longer registered at the address given at the time of delivery. Some letters are also waiting for up to three months to pick up at the post office.

Review of the past few years

The height of the climate monus has been variable in recent years. In 2022, the bonus for adults was 500 euros, while children and adolescents under the age of 18 received 250 euros. In 2023 the amount varied between 110 and 220 euros, and in 2024 the bonus was between 145 and 290 euros, with children and adolescents received half of the adult amount.

For 2024, the climate bonus was again staggered regionally, which means that it is divided into four different categories depending on the place of residence. These range from 145 euros for less urbanized areas up to 290 euros for heavily urbanized regions, with additional regional compensation into account.

claim and payment of the climate monus

The climate bonus is automatically paid to natural persons with a main residence in Austria, provided they live there at least 183 days a year. People restricted mobility receive the base amount and the maximum regional compensation, regardless of their place of residence. People with a tax annual income of over 66,612 euros have to tax the climate monus.

The payment of the climate monus 2024 started in autumn 2024 and runs by the end of March 2025. Claims without current account details receive their bonus as a voucher by post, which can be redeemed in many shops or can be exchanged in cash. A contact form is available for questions, as is a service hotline that can be reached from Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Despite the upcoming abolition, the claim to the climate monus for 2022, 2023 and 2024 remains. For many Austrians, the climate monus will extend into the coming years.
