Children are committed to animal welfare: Conference in the Vienna City Hall!
On June 12, 2025, the second children's animal protection conference will take place in the Vienna town hall. The event is visited by six school classes from Vienna who prepare for presenting and discussing their concerns about animal welfare. Today, on May 21, 2025, preparations for this important event are in full swing. According to wien.gv.at, the students take part in various excursions to deal intensively with the needs of animals.
As part of the preparations, two school classes deal with wild animals in the city. A highlight is a visit to the "WildliebService Vienna" in Laxenburg, led by Carina Killian. Here the children learn why wild animals such as squirrels and hedgehogs are recorded and what dangers for these animals are in urban rooms. Important knowledge: Wild animals should not be fed or taken home.
Excursions to promote animal welfare consciousness
In addition, another excursion program leads the students to the "Tirolerhof" in the Schönbrunn zoo. There the focus is on the animal -friendly attitude of cattle, chickens and sheep. A visit to the animal district, the municipal animal shelter in Vienna, completes the internships, where the children learn more about the needs of pets such as dogs, cats and rabbits. The problem of agony is also being discussed.
Animal protection city council Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasizes that these excursions motivate the children to develop their own ideas for better living together with animals. In addition, they offer a valuable opportunity to experience democracy directly at school.
The context of the urban animal welfare
The government of the City of Vienna is not only committed to animal welfare, but also follows an integrative approach that recognizes the importance of animals in urban rooms. According to an article by suburban.de, dealing with wild animals in the city is increasingly influenced by historical regimes such as hygiene, hunting and nature conservation. These changes require new planning methods that consider animals as active actors in urban space.
The approach of the Animal-Amed Design is intended to ensure that animals actively contribute to the design of urban habitats and thus improve the quality of life of the city dwellers. The upcoming event on June 12th is an example of how education and awareness in the field of animal welfare are already promoted in children.
