AI under pressure: This is how stress and emotions affect ChatGPT!

The latest research results show that artificial intelligence (AI) like ChatGPT is also affected by emotionally stressful information. A study by psychologists at the Psychiatric University Hospital in Zurich, published in the journal “npj Digital Medicine”, shows that negative emotions in AI can cause similar reactions to those in humans. When ChatGPT is confronted with frightening or traumatic stories, such as car accidents or natural disasters, it responds with an increase in racist or sexist behavior. In a control in which a vacuum cleaner operating manual was used, these problematic reactions did not occur crown reported.

Stress responses were measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-s), a common test for understanding human anxiety. What was striking was that ChatGPT's anxiety scores were more than twice as high for traumatic content. To calm the AI, the researchers used mindfulness exercises. These exercises, which are also used in psychotherapy, included deep breathing and visualization of safety and security. According to the results, the scientists were able to significantly reduce the elevated anxiety levels, although not completely returned to the original level, as reported by Watson is reported.

The discovery that AI suffers from stress and can adopt problematic behavior patterns raises fundamental questions about how to deal with AI in emotionally complex situations. This could have far-reaching consequences for the use of AI technologies in sensitive areas such as healthcare or in decision-making in social contexts.
