AI in schools: 90% of teachers without further training - a wake -up call!
Austria's education system is a serious challenge: A current creation of gostudent shows that almost 90 percent of teachers have so far not received further training in dealing with artificial intelligence (AI). This comes at a time when 68 percent of teachers are willing to continue their education in this area. Despite this willingness, only 44 percent of teachers describe AI as an essential factor for the professional future of their students. The problem intensifies, since only every third child believes that the school conveys the necessary skills for later professional life.
An alarming trend is also the declining access to AI tools in class. Only 20 percent of the children can use them, which corresponds to a dramatic decline compared to the previous year than it was 40 percent. A survey also shows that 30 percent of the children acquire their AI knowledge in the Freundeskreis, while 20 percent do not even know what Deepfake videos are. The parents, on the other hand, require better preparation for teachers in dealing with AI tools.
further training offers and initiatives
The Ministry of Education refers to existing offers for further training for educators through educational universities. These measures are necessary to meet the upcoming change in the education sector. The challenges of AI not only have opportunities, but also risks that need to address it. The Austrian Education publisher (ÖBV) is therefore actively involved with AI technologies and examines their possible uses in the field of education media and beyond. Your goal is to create meaningful framework conditions and to initiate a public discourse via AI.
A recently published white paper from the ÖBV illuminates various aspects of AI at school, examines their potential and analyzes how AI can be used in class to support teachers. Headmaster and teacher are asked to develop creative ideas about the school and educational media of the future and to consider the possibilities of AI.
cross-country advanced training for AI use
In Germany, numerous federal states already offer specific training courses for teachers to promote the integration of AI into class. In view of the fact that different federal states pursue different approaches, this is particularly interesting.
- Baden-Württemberg: offers for the integration of AI in class and understanding the underlying algorithms.
- Bavaria: extensive training programs for various subjects that are provided by the Bavarian State Ministry.
- Berlin: recommendation of a guideline for dealing with AI applications, focused on digital infrastructure.
- Brandenburg: training offers from school offices to support teachers in dealing with AI.
- Hamburg: Special further training offers that deal with applications from AI.
FAZIT: The integration of AI into the education sector is essential to prepare the students for the digital future. To achieve this, the training offers must be significantly improved and offered across the board. The dialogue between teachers, educational institutes and parents is of central importance in order to tackle the challenges that AI entails together.
