Fight for safe bike paths: VCÖ demands urgent measures for older road users!
The number of fatal bike accidents in Austria fell over a fourth compared to the previous year. According to an analysis of the VCÖ, most of these accidents, a total of 110 within three years, did not occur on special cycle paths, but on general roads. It is particularly alarming that 92 percent of fatal accidents took place outside of local areas, with two thirds on streets with a speed limit of 100 km/h. VCÖ expert Katharina Jaschinsky therefore urgently demands structural measures for safe bike paths, especially in settlement areas. The necessary rethinking in traffic planning is urgently challenged in view of the fact that the 32 fatalities were over 65 in the past year. More about this reported VCÖ .
In addition, a current VCÖ analysis shows that 628 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents over the past three years, which corresponds to 56 percent of all traffic fats. During this period, car inmates with 336 fatalities were the largest group. The mobility organization demands lower speed limits to reduce the high risk of accidents. The VCÖ suggests reducing the speed limit outside of towns to 80 km/h, as this reduces the stopping route and increases security. In addition, structurally separate walking and bike paths as well as safe transitions to stops are essential in order to continue to minimize the number of accidents, as the organization underlines. Kleine Zeitung reported how important such measures are .
