History of women's rights in Austria

The events are part of a broader discourse on the achievements and challenges of the women's movement in Austria. The women's movement of the 1970s led to profound reforms that promoted gender equality. The most important achievements of the past 50 years include the abortion of abortion in 1975 and extensive family law reforms. Another milestone was the foundation of the Ministry of Women in 1990, which acted as a central point of contact for equality issues.

Karoline von Perin is an outstanding figure of the "first women's movement", which launched the "Vienna Democratic Women's Association" in 1848. The right to vote was introduced in 1918 after the First World War. The “second women's movement” in the 1960s dealt intensively with the right to self -determination over one's own body, which was reinforced by various equality measures under the leadership of Chancellor Bruno Kreisky (SPÖ).

Current challenges

Despite these progress, there are still major challenges in equality policy. The gender play gap in Austria remains at 18.4%, while the number of female female seized in 2024. In addition, 60 women's shelter places in Austria are urgently required. Feminist referendum continues to demand equality and adequate protective measures for women.

The current series of events and the historical context of women's rights in Austria once again show how important it is to discuss equality policy and to promote necessary reforms. These topics are as relevant today as it was 50 years ago, and it remains to be hoped that the upcoming events and discussions will give fruitful impulses in order to further advance progress in equality.
