Villacher Hauptbahnhof: Modern bike parking systems without connection to the cycle path network
At the Villacher Central Station, two modern bike parking facilities were recently inaugurated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). These new facilities, which are located both in the west at the post office and in the east near the Austrian health insurance fund, offer cyclists a contemporary way of parking their bikes. The Villacher Radlobby sees this as a positive step, but expresses criticism with regard to the lack of connection to the urban cycle path network.
The spokesman for the Villach Radlobby Carinthia, Christoph Zettinig, emphasizes in his feedback: "It is gratifying that the ÖBB take measures to make the switch from bicycle to the train more attractive." At the same time, however, he notices that the new storage facilities cannot be reached via suitable bike paths, which significantly affects the use. A particularly striking detail is that a "Ende Cycle Path End" sign is attached to the exit of the new bike parking system, which illustrates the uncoordinated planning of the cycling infrastructure.
criticism of the connection
The lack of bike paths that connect the new storage facilities with the city raises questions. Zettinig finds that the city of Villach recently developed a new bike master plan, but does not seem to be able to establish the necessary connections. In particular, the bike path from the east ends abruptly about 150 meters in front of the new bike garage. The access to the parking system at the main post is also difficult for cyclists due to the lack of a safe way.
The cycling lobby therefore demands that these gaps in the cycle path signage close as quickly as possible and to create a secure connection of the train station. "Only a small effort would be necessary to realize the last few meters of cycle path along Willroiderstraße, which would be essential for a continuous connection," explains Zettinig. In addition, such measures would also benefit the "green axis", a project to green and improve the environment.
city administration reacts
The city administration of Villach is optimistic. City Councilor Harald Sobe (SPÖ) emphasizes that the expansion of the bike & Ride systems is an increase in value for the main train station and improves the integration of bike and rail traffic. The public relations office confirms that the connection of the cycle path network to the new parking spaces in the upcoming bike concept of the city will be taken into account. However, the final planning depends on future redesign of the station forecourt.
In addition, City Councilor Sascha Jabali Adeh announces that a cycling crossing at the Bike & Ride system in the Zeidler-von-Görz Straße should be implemented at short notice. The comprehensive redesign of the station forecourt is planned, but there is no concrete time frame.
Overall, the development at Villach Central Station shows promising approaches, but without the necessary bike paths, an incomplete picture remains. In view of the growing popularity of cycling, it is crucial that this connection is realized promptly in order to meet the needs of cyclists.
