Villach receives European Energy Award Gold: A milestone for climate protection

The city of Villach has received a significant award that recognizes its intensive efforts in the field of climate protection and sustainable energy efficiency. At the awarding of the European Energy Award in Gold 2024 in Bolzano, Villach was rewarded as one of only two Austrian communities. This prize recognizes communities that are not only committed to climate protection and renewable energies in their region, but also at European level.

Villach is known as the largest E5 city in Austria, which has now received the third confirmation of its gold status. "The municipalities play a central role when it comes to achieving the goals of European energy and climate policy, in particular the goal of climate neutrality by 2050," said Peter Brunner, the State Council for Environmental, Nature and Climate Protection. This shows how important municipal initiatives are for the overall strategy for reducing CO2 emissions.

honor at the international level

The award is a special praise for the sustainable efforts of Villach, which are recognized in the context of a competition in which 1900 municipalities participate in Europe. Of these, 64 municipalities were allowed to receive an award. In addition to Villach, the Tyrolean city of Wörgl was also awarded. Mayor Günther Albel proudly stated: "We are also among the very best communities in terms of climate work across Europe, our efforts and initiatives are recognized and appreciated by the highest level."

The mayor and sustainability officer Sarah Katholnig accepted the award in Bolzano. She emphasized that all measures and initiatives for sustainability take place from a deep sense of responsibility: "We feel responsible for shaping a good future and leaving the next generations a livable Villach. We will continue to go this consistent path out of conviction."

This recognition is not only a reason for the joy for the city administration, but also a sign that Villach takes a pioneering role in European climate policy. The award could also inspire other communities, to pursue similar sustainable practices and to pursue their own climate goals, which would benefit from increasing effort to protect climate protection.

The certificate is another step in the right direction for continuous efforts to improve the quality of life and to strengthen ecological responsibility in the region. Villach will continue to play a central role in the discussion about climate neutrality and sustainable development, whereby the teachings from the award received will certainly have an impact on future projects and initiatives.
