Sustainable district heating for Villach: use wastewater as a heat source
The city of Villach plans to use the sewage of the largest sewage treatment plant in Austria for environmentally friendly district heating production. This should be done by using heat pumps, which efficiently prepare the waste heat from the waste water for the city's district heating supply. The aim of this Initiative is to further reduce CO2 emissions and thus make a contribution to climate protection.
The agreement between the city of Villach and Kelag Energie & Warmth (KEW) is not only considered an important step towards sustainability, but also has the potential to make the energy supply of households even more environmentally friendly. The mayor of Villach, Günther Albel, was optimistic about this project. He sees a significant measure on the way to an efficient and sustainable energy future.
The concept is currently in the evaluation phase, and the detailed planning for the implementation is expected to begin in 2026. It remains to be seen how this project will develop and what specific measures are taken to make the use of wastewater for district heating supply in the long term.
