75 years of city cinema Villach: A cultural treasure celebrates anniversary

The city cinema Villach recently celebrated its impressive 75th anniversary. This ceremony was not only a reason for joy, but also brought together important personalities. Mag. Christof Papousek, managing director of Constantin Film-Holding GmbH, and Vice Mayor Gerda Sandriesser welcomed the guests. There was also a special surprise: Kommr Bernhard Plasounig presented a certificate of honor on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce to the cinema.

The city cinema, which has been operated by Constantin Film-Holding GmbH since 1993, is an important cultural institution in Villach. "It has been a place for 31 years where the finest art house program can be seen," said Papousek proudly. At the celebration, the audience was happy about a demonstration of the film "The Book Walker", which not only embodies regional charm, but also a high level. At the celebration, a special Villacher carnival cake was served, a real pleasure that perfectly rounded off the solemn atmosphere.

a long history

The history of the city cinema begins on May 5, 1948, when Villach secured the gymnastics hall seized by the English as an event room. A year later, on April 16, 1949, the actual cinema was opened with the film "The Black Swan". This was an important step for the cultural landscape of the city.

The city cinema has developed further and further through various conversions and modernizations. One striking point was the opening of the city cinema center on May 12, 1984, where several cinemas and modern technology were installed. These developments took place at a rapid pace, because within just 16 weeks numerous companies worked on this conversion.

1993 the cinema was back at a turning point when the city of Villach stopped operating and Lichtspieltheater Betriebs GmbH took responsibility. This year, a collaboration with Group 508, a cultural association that has existed since 1951, was also initiated. This led to the establishment of the film studio, which mainly shows arthouse films and today represents one of the last bastions for independent and regional filmmaking in Carinthia.

cultural importance

The city cinema is not only a place for films, but also acts as a cultural meeting place in Villach. It has offered generations of citizens a variety of cinematic experiences and remains an essential part of the Villach cultural scene. It will be exciting to see how the city cinema will continue to influence the film culture in the region.
