New sculpture in Villach: pupils and apprentices design artwork in the roundabout

in Villach has been shining an impressive six -meter -high sculpture made of steel in the new roundabout on Italian Straße since November 9, 2024. This work of art is the result of creative cooperation between pupils of the HTL Villach and apprentices of the Carinthian machine factory (KMF). The sculpture, which has a weight of 15 tons, is based on a wooden trophy that is awarded to young art talents in Villach every year.

The implementation of this far -reaching idea presented the young artists with a great challenge. Oliver Zlamal, the commercial managing director of the KMF, emphasized the difficulty of welding the many lamellae made of corten steel into a stable construction, which nevertheless appears light and elegant. The impressive design is achieved by the three -dimensional arrangement of the slats, which creates fascinating shadow games during the day.

practical learning and collaboration

However, the project went beyond pure art. The reinforced concrete foundation that carries the sculpture was also made under the instructions and with the participation of the HTL students. HTL director Peter Kusstatscher emphasized that this project puts the theory that students learned into practice. It shows how important practical experiences are in training.

The inauguration of the roundabout took place on Friday and marked an important milestone for the city of Villach. Despite some delays due to delivery difficulties, the artwork was finally presented publicly. In the evening, the sculpture is also illuminated, which reinforces the appearance in the dark. It is therefore not only a simple traffic symbol, but also an impressive, artistically designed element that upgrades the urban area.

For the city and the institutions involved, this project offers valuable perspectives. Not only the creativity of young people is encouraged, but also strengthened manual skills in construction - a successful combination of art, technology and education.
