Electricity and gas become noticeably more expensive in 2025: Households have to pay that much!

Österreich - 2025 in Austria is expected to increase energy prices- electricity and gas bills threaten to become more expensive. According to the “viewer” price comparison platform, the increasing fees and the expiry of state funding are the main causes of this development. Households have to adjust to additional costs of up to 980 euros, although the price per kilowatt hour initially remains stable. Stefan Spiegelhofer, energy expert at "Viewer", explains: "Additional network charges and the elimination of the electricity cost brake with an average household with 4,000 kilowatt hours of consumption at additional costs between 200 to 290 euros alone. A comparable situation applies to gas-heated households that have to expect annual additional costs of 156 to 251 euros, as well as Energy news magazine reports.

regional differences and renewed taxes

The additional costs vary greatly depending on the federal state. In Carinthia, households only have to count on an additional effort of around 9 euros annually with a consumption of 15,000 kWh, while the costs in Upper Austria can be almost 104 euros. On average, the Austrian households have around 60 euros additional gas network fees. The main reason for this is the return of the natural gas tax, which after two years reduction increases to 6.6 cents per cubic meter, which means annual additional costs of 77 euros for many families. In addition, from January, the CO2 pricing will be increased from 45 euros to 55 euros per ton, which brings further costs of around 70 euros per household.

The focus is particularly on electricity prices, since the increase in electricity network charges by 8 to 32 percent between federal states is due. This could mean annual additional costs between 22 and 98 euros for households that consume 4,000 kWh per year. At the same time, the electricity tax from 2025 is increased, which causes an additional 60 euros in costs for the same amount of consumption. Spiegelhofer warns: "Households who have not changed a tariff by the end of the year must expect up to 725 euros in additional costs for electricity." Further information about possible tariff changes can be called up at "viewers" to cushion the rising prices.
