Hedgehog in need: Ferlacher fights for the protection of the endangered species

The domestic hedgehog is not easy and sees numerous threats exposed. The loss of its habitat is alarming - so much that the hedgehog is now on the list of endangered species of the World Conservation Union IUCN for the first time. Ute Rosicky, who has been running a reception center in Ferlach for 30 years, comments on this decision: "Finally. Finally. The little Igerln have been screaming for help for a long time."

In their catchment station, hedgehogs, which cannot survive in the wild, are recorded almost all year round. That is why the station offers an important contact point for injured or weakened animals. Around 160 of these animals have already been cared for in the current year. In particularly difficult years in which the circumstances are even less favorable, the numbers even reach over 200.

threats to the habitat

The decline in the habitat for hedgehog has various causes. Urbanization and the associated loss of green areas make a decisive contribution to the hedgehogs have less and less living space available. A lack of food and accidents from traffic are other serious dangers with which the animals are confronted. These developments require urgent measures and attention, not only from conservationists, but also from society as a whole.

The IUCN's assessment that the hedgehog is now considered endangered is a wake -up call. It is crucial to raise awareness of the emergency of these animals and to take suitable measures to protect their habitats and their way. The use of catch stations, such as that of Ute Rosicky, is of crucial importance. These facilities not only help the animals, but also sensitize the public for the needs and the endangerment of the hedgehog.

The survey of the hedgehog on the list of endangered species underlines the growing urgency to promote the protection of domestic fauna and flora. Such measures are necessary to ensure a sustainable future for biodiversity and to secure the future habitat of these animals. It is to be hoped that this development will lead to the relevant institutions and the public become more active.
