Phishing attack in the Spittal district: 62-year-old loses thousands of euros

On November 16, a 62-year-old woman from the Spittal district was victim of a phishing fraud on the Drau. In this case, the woman received a fraudulent SMS that tempted her to reveal her sensitive e-banking data. Such a message often looks like an official notification of banks or other financial institutions and can easily be perceived as trustworthy.

At the latest on the evening of November 18, the person concerned found that unusual activities were carried out on their bank account. In a short time, several thousand euros had been transferred from their savings account to a checking account, followed by two major payments. They alerted these unauthorized transactions.

reactions and measures

To avert further damage, the woman acted quickly and immediately blocked her bank account and access to e-banking. On November 19, she filed a complaint with the police to report the incident and to initiate an investigation. Thanks to the rapid measures, the investigators were able to quickly become active.

The investigation turned out to be that the recipients of the payments were online electronics retailers. This could indicate that the perpetrators with the fraud would be specifically due to goods they wanted to order on the Internet. Fortunately, the orders concerned were canceled in good time before the goods could be delivered. According to current information, the investigation is still underway, and it remains to be hoped that the perpetrators responsible will soon be identified.

For such incidents, this case illustrates the importance of vigilance and security in dealing with digital banking services. It is advisable to carefully examine each message and to use unusual information to use appropriate security measures.
