Advent in the heart of Austria: cribs, tours and digital experiences

In Austria, the Advent and pre-Christmas period is celebrated with a variety of cultural experiences that link both old traditions and innovative approaches. Churches and local initiatives open their doors and invite everyone interested to go on an inspiring journey through the world of cribs and digital art.

The focus is on special tours in the Mariendom in Linz. The event “Paths to Christmas” offers visitors the opportunity to visit Sebastian Osterrieder's restored crib in the crypt. In addition, it goes to the inner gallery, from where an impressive view of the interior of the cathedral and the artistically painted high choral windows should be enjoyed. These tours are offered on all Advent Sundays and on the holidays (December 25th, 26th and 1st, 6th). Individual visitors can also explore the tour independently; Informative tables invite you to reflect at various stations.

digital developments

The advent program in the Linz Mariendom is expanded by an innovative digital crib. In cooperation with the Ars Electronica Futurelab, the crib figures were digitized using photogrammetry and are now available as 3D models. This digital representation enables visitors to immerse yourself in the Christmas story in an unconventional way. In order to present the figures as realistically as possible, up to 500 photos were taken, which took several hours of working time to capture the details.

But art is not only offered in Linz. In Klagenfurt, the crib lovers Villach shows an impressive exhibition with around 30 domestic and oriental cribs from November 26th to 29th. This is accompanied by musical performances, including appearances by the duo "L’Artésienne", which interprets works by Tchaikovsky and Svoboda. On the last day of the exhibition, students of regional music schools appear, which contributes to the festive atmosphere.

Salzburg crib tradition

In Salzburg, the setting up of cribs is seen as part of a long tradition, both in private households and in churches. During the Christmas season, numerous places of worship present handmade works of art. Particularly noteworthy is the crib of a Tyrolean artist from around 1870 in the Salzburg Cathedral and a baroque crib from the 18th century in the Franciscan Church, which has figures from the 17th century. A special exhibition is currently taking place in the St. Elisabeth/Bible world in the St. Elisabeth/Bible world.

These multi -layered offers impressively show how tradition and modern approaches come together in Austria during Christmas. From historical cribs to digital exhibitions, something is offered for every interest that makes Advent a really special time.
