The focus on soil consumption: municipalities have to take responsibility!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - On March 3, 2025, there were important discussions about the area consumption in Austria, especially in Carinthia. Elisabeth Götze, the spokeswoman for the Greens for cities and municipalities, commented on the current situation. Over 12 hectares of fertile soil are consumed daily, which not only affects the quality of life of the communities, but also endangers biodiversity. Götze urgently calls for municipalities willing to reform in order to achieve a maximum of 2.5 hectares of area consumption per day. This is crucial for the preservation of the livelihood of future generations. However, Johannes Pressl, President of the Community Association, contradicted the proposal of an upper limit and emphasized that the municipalities have to play a central role in the design of land use, especially when it comes to dedication to building grounds. Götze demands that the municipal association does not block decisions that are necessary in the sense of soil protection in order to better use the existing areas.

Financial support for Carinthia's communities

In a further step to support the municipalities in Carinthia, the state government will provide up to 1.4 million euros per year. The municipalities are obliged to revise their local development concepts every ten years in order to determine which areas should remain protected and undeveloped. These concepts include decisions about recreation areas, commercial settlements and living space. The new spatial planning law, which came into force in 2021, obliges the municipalities to revise form within five years. In view of the complexity of the guidelines, support from the state is considered urgently necessary to develop suitable future concepts. Municipalities must now find practical solutions in order to meet the requirements for land use and at the same time minimize the soil consumption, such as reports.
