Cold and fresh snow in May: Weather debacle throughout Austria!

Niederösterreich, Österreich - May 22nd, 2025 brings an unexpected weather in Austria. While other regions of the country had already expected the warm temperatures of spring, this May has been colder than in the past two years. For the first time since 2023, a full month is below the long-term temperature average (1991-2020). This is particularly noticeable in the east of Austria, where the temperatures in Lower Austria and in northern Burgenland are up to 1.8 degrees lower than the climate agent. In the total average, the cooling is about 0.9 degrees below the average.

This striking cooling is due to several cool weather conditions that are currently influenced by deep "Magnus". According to the severe weather center (UWZ), the high mountains are counted with a good portion of fresh snow, especially in the Hohe Tauern. Up to 40 centimeters of fresh snow should fall in the coming hours. The snow border is also falling, and weather experts warn mountain athletes and hikers of an increased avalanche danger.

extreme weather conditions in focus

But the current capsoles of weather are not just a short -term phenomenon. They are in the context of a major problem that affects climate change. A current report by the World Climate Council (IPCC) shows that the surface temperature of the earth rises as quickly as ever in the past 2000 years. The increase in extreme weather experiences - like heavy rain, extreme heat and other natural disasters - is further tightened by human activities, in particular the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. This leads to increased greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and an unchecked increase in sea level.

The extent of the threats from climate change becomes clear in a study by ETH Zurich, which shows that without climate change, many of the weather -related deaths, such as the more than 53,000 in Europe in 2022, would have been avoidable. According to this analysis, future extreme weather events could continue to intensify when it comes to people worldwide, in particular the most endangered population groups.

measures to combat climate change

In order to deal with the challenges of climate change, scientists demand extensive political measures. This includes reducing fossil fuels and the expansion of renewable energies. Flood protection, early warning systems and the renaturation of ecosystems are also crucial measures to minimize the effects of extreme weather events. Studies show that simple adjustments to the infrastructure and improved flood protection measures can make significant differences.

In Austria, it is becoming increasingly important to face these challenges. While May 2025 comes up with unusual weather phenomena, global weather developments are an urgent wake -up call to critically question their own actions and take proactive steps - for the protection of the population and the environment.
