Jafar Panahi triumphed with un Simple Accident in Cannes 2025!
Vienna, Österreich - At the Film Festival of Cannes 2025 there is a name in the spotlight: Jafar Panahi. The Iranian director won the coveted golden palm with his latest work "Un Simple Accident". The film addresses the experiences of former prisoners and the critical perspective on the violence of the Iranian regime. The competition was made up of 21 other films, but under the chairmanship of Juliette Binoche, Panahi was able to convince the jury.
"Un Simple Accident" tells the story of a group of former prisoners who devote themselves to a kidnapping to take revenge on their torturers. The film develops into a chaotic road trip in which questions of revenge and nature of violence are discussed. Despite this serious topic, there are also humorous elements that Panahi skilfully incorporates into the narrative.
prices and honors
The award ceremony in Cannes, which took place after a short -term power failure, also produced several awards. Mascha Schilinski received the prize of the jury for "looking into the sun", which she shares with Oliver Laxe for "Sirât". The great price of the jury went to Joachim Trier for "Sentimental Value". Keleber Mendonça Filho was recognized as the best director for "O Secreto Agente", while Nadia Melliti received the award for the best actress for "La Petite Dernière". Wagner Moura was honored as the best actor for his performance in "O Secreto Agente" and Jean-Pierre and Luc Darden won the prize for the best script with "Jeunes Mères".
The multi -layered work by Panahi is particularly remarkable because it was created in a context that is extremely challenging for many filmmakers in Iran. The director, who supported the green movement in 2009, was then proven with a 20-year rotary ban and a travel ban.
Panhi's return to Cannes
Despite the adversity, he found ways to realize his films. For example, he shot some of his works in his living room or in a car. His latest film received standing ovation of eight minutes in Cannes, a sign of recognition for his creativity and courage. Panahi, who was arrested in July 2022 and was imprisoned in the Evin prison for almost seven months, was finally released in February 2023 when the Supreme Court of Iran lifted its judgment in 2010. The pressure that the Iranian government has on artists also influences the narrative in its films. These show unexchested women who defy the Hijab law and illustrate the brutality of state action.
Panahi himself says that the characters in "Un Simple Accident" are inspired by true conversations in prison. While other Iranian filmmakers have fled into exile, Panahi is planning to continue to live and work in Iran, describing filmmaking as a community act of improvisation.
With his exciting new film and the award at Cannes' film festival, Jafar Panahi has once again proven that he is an indispensable voice in the international cinema that throws the light on the dark reality of his home country. Despite all the challenges, he remains an integral part of the film world and plans to work on his next project soon.
