Israel attacks Airport in Sanaa: Yemenia Airways no longer flies!
Sanaa, Jemen - On May 29, 2025, Israel attacked the airport in Sanaa, Yemen, in response to a rocket attack by the Houthi rebels. This military commitment led to the destruction of the last passenger plane from Yemenia Airways, an Airbus A320. The attack took place after the Houthis had fired two rockets on Israeli territory the day before. Israeli fighter jets then attacked the international airport in Sanaa, which was referred to by Yemenia Airways as a "cowardly act of terrorist". As a result, the airline is initially planting all flights to and from Sanaa Airport. Three weeks ago, the airport had already been the destination of a bombardment by the Israeli Air Force.
The Houthi rebels regularly attack Israel to express their solidarity with Hamas. These military actions are not only part of a more comprehensive conflict in the Middle East, but also bring the international community into a difficult situation. The UN Security Council had already called for moderation in the past and condemned the Houthi attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea. These attacks also led to an urgency meeting of the UN Security Council on January 13, 2024, in which Russia described the US air attacks on Huthi positions in Yemen as violating international law.
international reactions and conflict situation
The situation is tense; Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow criticized the attacks and emphasized that the UN Security Council resolution does not provide for such military actions. Russia also asked the Houthi rebels to stop attacks on international shipping. UN General Secretary António Guterres declared the Huthi attacks on merchant ships as unacceptable and asked for an armistice in the Gaza Strip.
US ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield warned of the threat that is based on the Huthi rebels and pointed out the Iranian support for this group. Such developments could further destabilize the already difficult situation in Yemen and the entire region. The conflict between Israel and the Houthi rebels shows how networked the various actors are in the Middle East and how little scope for diplomatic solutions seems.
Overall, the Yemen stands with far -reaching challenges, not only because of internal conflicts, but also on the basis of the influences and actions of international actors. The escalation of the conflict could have fatal consequences for the civilian population in Yemen.
