Auxiliary deliveries in the Gaza Strip: A bright spot after months of blockade!

On May 19, 2025, humanitarian aid was again approved in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of March. This happened over the Kerem Shalom border crossing after the intended relief goods had undergone security controls. Five trucks with important foods reached the area, about which the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed on Sunday. The decision to re -allow these deliveries had become necessary because more than 2.2 million inhabitants are dependent on external help, while international organizations warn of impending famine.

The Israeli government had blocked aid deliveries since the beginning of March after the Hamas accused Hamas to resell these relief goods. Netanyahu emphasized during the announcement that the basic supply of food was only organized on the recommendation of the army to prevent famine and not to endanger international support for Israel.

New distribution mechanism and humanitarian zone

The aid actions are to be managed using a new distribution mechanism, which is to be fully implemented by the end of the month. In the future, relief goods such as flour and fuel will be distributed in a new “humanitarian zone” near Rafah at central locations. The implementation is accompanied by controls by the Israeli army. However, this procedure was criticized by the United Nations because civilians could be at risk on the way to these distribution centers.

The decision to cancel the blockade is in the context of growing pressure, especially on the United States. The US specialist Steve Witkoff had made it clear that a humanitarian crisis was not tolerated. In view of the massive air raids and the use of soil troops by Israel, Hamas explained that the situation in the Gaza Strip remains dramatic for the civilian population. The intensive military offensive has led to numerous victims in the past few days, according to reports hundreds of people died and many more had to leave the north in the south of Gazas. (ZDF)

The Gaza War, which began in October 2023 with a terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel, continues to lead to a tense situation. Around 1,200 people were killed in this attack and 250 kidnapped. According to the health authority controlled by the Hamas, more than 53,300 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have so far died, a number that includes both fighters and civilians. Discussions about a possible ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which take place in Qatar, aim at the release of ten hostages in exchange for a 45 to 60 day ceasefire. (ZDF)
