Held in the Tauern tunnel: Motorists prevent catastrophe from the vehicle fire!

On May 30, 2025, around 10:25 a.m. in the Tauern tunnel (A10), a vehicle fire shortly after the north portal. A pick-up, which was loaded with a trailer, ignited for an unknown cause. However, the driver quickly acted and coupled the trailer in time to avoid worse consequences. When the fire brigades arrived in Zederhaus and Flachau, the pick-up was already in full fire, but was quickly brought under control and deleted.

Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident. During the extinguishing measures, the tunnel was closed at short notice in both directions. This led to a kilometer -long backlog, but the tunnel towards Salzburg could be released again around 11:30 a.m. The damage caused by the tunnel remained low, and a total of 46 emergency services were used to combat the fire.

Details of the incident

The driver of the pick-up probably prevented worse with his rapid reaction. The vehicle burned out completely while the fire brigade was able to intervene in good time. The cause of the fire is currently still unknown.

The incident is part of the statistics of the tunnel fires, which were documented from 2012 to 2023. According to an analysis, there were 66 events in street tunnels during this period, in which the tubes were significantly smoky. In 57 of these cases, drivers were able to stop their burning vehicles into the tunnel before entering the entrance, which indicates the importance of quick action. In other cases in which smoke moved to tunnels from the outside, critical situations could also be created.

quick action can save lives

The incident in the Tauern tunnel impressively shows how important a rapid reaction is in such emergency situations. The fire brigades were on site within a very short time and were able to contain the fire without personal injury. The preventive measures and the quick intervention of the emergency services are crucial to prevent other tunnels in the future.

The research also shows the risks connected to tunnel fires and the need to take suitable safety precautions. According to a comprehensive analysis of [IFA Swiss] (https://www.ifa-swiss.ch/magazin/detail/tunnelbraende-von-2012-bis-2023-statistics-Aus-Medien reports), further measures are still required to minimize such dangerous situations and increase security in tunnels.
