Hattmannsdorfer warns: EU has to prepare for Trump's tariffs!
Hattmannsdorf, Österreich - Minister of Economics Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer has today commented on US President Donald Trump's recent announcement to introduce tariffs from 20 percent to all EU imports. These abrupt measures, which are considered unpredictable in free world trade, represent a significant threat to the economic stability of the EU, especially for Germany. Hattmannsdorfer criticized the zigzack course Washington and emphasized the urgency of a closed EU front.
In order to avoid trade barriers, according to Hattmannsdorfer, the goal should be to find a solution at the negotiating table. "Such trade barriers lead to a 'loose-loose scenario' for both sides," he said, warning that the EU had to seriously final countermeasures if Trump implements its threats. In particular, the focus should be on the tech and digital service companies in which the United States achieve a commercial balance sheet surplus.
EU reacts to threats
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the EU's willingness to have talks with the United States in order to stabilize trade relationships. However, if there are no successful negotiations, the EU is planning retaliation. Possible countermeasures could include further tariffs on US products, including steel, aluminum, textiles, leather goods, beef and soybeans. The EU strives for a customs structure similar to that of the United States.
In the past few months, the European Parliament, especially after Trump's re -election in November 2024, has intensively debated the transatlantic relationships. Representatives such as Bernd Lange, Chairman of the Committee on International Trade, have pointed out the possibility of counter-tariffs, while Maroš Šefčovič criticized the US tariffs as harmful to companies and consumers. Adam Szłapka, Polish Minister of European Affairs, emphasized the advantages of open and fair international trade.strategic answers from the EU
The unity of the EU member states is considered crucial to defend economic interests. Under the background of these new customs threats, the EU also discusses the introduction of a coordinated digital tax on US technology groups in order to better protect its own economic interests. In addition, the EU is looking for new trading partnerships, especially with Mercosur countries and India to diversify exports wider and minimize strategic dependencies.
The ongoing negotiations and discussions with regard to tariffs are essential to secure the future of transatlantic trade and to protect both the EU and the United States from significant economic damage. Hattmannsdorfer appealed that it was time to look for solutions together instead of losing themselves in stagnant argument.
