Greens demand quick integration: government has to finally act!

On May 28, 2025, the integration spokeswoman for the Greens, Sigi Maurer, calls for a higher pace in implementing integration measures in Austria. According to her, the first steps of the government to integrate from the 1st day are to be welcomed, but the implementation of the necessary integration offers is inadequate. Maurer in particular criticizes the reduction of the integration budget by 42 million euros and in question the use of the Austrian integration fund ( öif )

In an internal report by the ÖIF, problems in fulfilling legal orders for personnel savings are also shown. The Federal Government plans to expand parliament's right to interpellate to the ÖIF, while Maurer calls for more transparency from this institution, which it calls "Black Box".

Integration Act and its goals

The Integration Act, which came into force on June 9, 2017 and has been experiencing several amendments since then, aims at the rapid integration of asylum -entitled, subsidiary rights and legally resident third -country nationals. These people are obliged to actively participate in the integration measures, which is understood as a mutual process between the state and the person concerned. Language promotion and orientation play an important role (further information on bundeskanzleramt.gv.at ).

It is also important that the law not only serves immigrant, but also regulates quality assurance of German courses and exams. These German courses have to meet uniform criteria nationwide, and the integration tests are a prerequisite for the reference to state services and for the residence procedure. In addition, high safety and quality standards are guaranteed for these exams.

Current challenges

The discussion about sanctions in the event of non -compliance with the integration measures is considered legitimate by Maurer. Her point of criticism is that the necessary integration offers for migrants are currently not provided. In addition, the ÖIF budget has almost doubled in recent years, which underlines that, despite the cuts, enormous remedies have been invested in order to promote integration.

With the integration law, increasing transparency and improved data exchange is also sought through integration monitoring. However, the challenges with which integration policy is confronted require a quick reaction from the Minister of Integration Plakolm in order to effectively implement the mutual obligations of the state and immigrant.
