Large garbage scandal: the police smash gang behind plastic export!
In Spain, the police smashed an international gang that illegally disposed of plastic waste. This group is responsible for disposing of at least 41,000 tons of plastic waste from Spain, France and Portugal, reports vienna.at . The waste was made illegally stored in Spain and partly exported to countries such as India, Turkey, Malaysia, Brazil, Morocco, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
The police carried out six searches in cooperation with Europol and other European authorities. Five people were arrested in these missions, and is currently being determined against 15 more. According to the Guardia Civil, mostly, it is agricultural plastics from France and Portugal, which were transported, traded and stored across borders without permission.
illegally disposed of garbage and its risks
In Spain, the illegal waste on three unauthorized landfills in the León and Valencia regions were deposited. This illegal practice has significant negative effects on the environment and public health. The garbage not only threatens the habitats in the affected regions, but also contributes to the global plastic crisis.
The situation is made more difficult by the fact that over 800 million tons of plastic have been produced since the beginning of the negotiations on the UN plastic agreement, as the WWF reports (). This immense amount means that every minute gets 21,000 kilograms of plastic into the oceans, which has serious consequences for the sea ecosystems.
global efforts to combat the plastic crisis
The international community spoke out for a strong agreement for the regulation of the entire life cycle of plastic at the last meeting in Korea. Despite these efforts, the plastic crisis is progressing unhindered. The countries have to position themselves against blocking states in order to enforce effective measures to combat the plastic waste problem. An ambitious agreement is considered the only solution to combat the devastating consequences of plastic waste and protect the environment.
