Girls' Day in East Tyrol: Experience technology, realize dreams!
Osttirol, Österreich - On April 24, 2025, this year's “Girls’ Day ”took place in Tyrol, which was held for the 24th time. This day of action pursues the goal of offering girls new perspectives in career orientation and inspiring them for technical professions. This year, around 770 students between the ages of 13 and 16 took part in the activities from 44 Tyrolean schools. A total of 79 companies and educational institutions opened their doors to inform the participants about various professions in the areas of handicrafts, technology and natural sciences.
The event was organizedby the Tyrolean Labor Market Promotion Society and the Tyrol Education Directorate, which provided funding of 100,000 euros. Especially in East Tyrol, the interest in Girls ’Day was great. The Women's Professional Center Osttirol organized workshops in which six girls made solar lamps from cucumber glasses and solar cells. In addition, there were discussions about role models, career wishes and apprenticeships in the Lienz Chamber of Labor.
practical experience and creative techniques
The students were given the opportunity to become active, try out techniques and exchange ideas with experts. In the workshops, the girls worked with drilling machines and soldering iron and created technical works of art, which showed that technology is not just a male thing. In the forcher carpentry, where ten girls made treasure chests out of stone pine, junior chief Gabriel Forcher encouraged the young generation to take craft professions. An example of the success of this approach is Lisa-Marie Pitterl, who found its way to carpentry technology through Girls ’Day and is about to take the apprenticeship.
The machine builder Liebherr Lienz also participated in the event with seven girls who tested various technical activities and got to know the material flow. Sylvana Hopfgartner-Wolsegger from Liebherr announced that three female apprentices will start with them in autumn 2025. Also with thirst, another company on site, eight girls learned how to build a Bluetooth box, from electronics to the housing, which combined fun and practical knowledge.
The way to gender -sensitive career orientation
Observations show that girls in technical apprenticeships and courses are strongly underrepresented. Initiatives such as the STEM campaign "Come on!" And projects such as Girlsatec aim to promote the interests of young women in technology and to support them in often male -dominated areas. Dr. In this context, Uwe Pfenning describes the structural and individual discrimination against women in technical professions. The challenges in front of which girls are facing require authentic address and overcoming prejudices.
In current studies, it becomes clear that technical professions have to be made attractive for girls. Employers should emphasize the advantages such as high income and flexible working hours. Special topics such as sustainability increase the interest in technical professions, since the proportion of women in areas such as environmental technology is higher than in electrical engineering. This also became clear in the Workshop of the Women's Record Center, where the creative approaches of the girls led to sustainable topics when producing solar lamps.
The Girls ’Day and similar projects illustrate the importance of diversity in technical professions. The positive support from companies and practical experience for girls help to reduce prejudices and to present technology as an attractive professional field. The commitment in career orientation remains indispensable in order to promote equal opportunities and a fair representation in many professional fields. A better understanding of technology and its application can be achieved through age -appropriate and protected learning rooms, as intended in current projects, and help to ensure that more and more girls are taking this path.
