Court releases the participation for controversial nautical cables in front of Borkum!

Borkum, Deutschland - On May 23, 2025, the administrative court of Oldenburg granted a sub -permit for the construction of a nautical cable in front of Borkum in the urgent procedure. However, this approval only affects the water law part and not the nature conservation liberation that is still pending. The court gave an application by the Dutch company One-Dyas and decided that the water law approval is immediately effective. Nevertheless, the construction of the lake cable must not yet be started. This was reported ÖKONEWS .

The German Environmental Aid (DUH) has objected to the approval to ensure the protection of the species -rich stone riff against possible destruction. Sascha Müller-Kraenner, federal manager of the DUH, expressed significant concerns about the need for the project and the potential effects on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The DUH plans to exploit all legal means to prevent the construction of the sea cable and fear that the start of the project could bring serious damage to important ecosystems.

controversy about nature conservation and climate goals

The nature conservation aspects have not been treated in the judicial decision, which is considered a serious mistake by critics. Susanne Gerstner, chair of the BUND Niedersachsen, found that the approval was a threat to the climate goals of Lower Saxony and the status of the Wadden Sea as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jürgen Akkermann, Mayor of Borkum, also emphasized the importance of ecosystem protection and the need to protect the sensitive stone reef.

  • The project already has a history: In August 2024, the DUH successfully complained against the laying of the lake cabinet, which led to a temporary stop of the project.
  • A previously granted approval of the NLWKN was lifted by the court, which led to a new application from One-Dyas in September 2024.
  • Another application was approved in April 2025 and since March 2025 one-dyas gas has been supporting a platform that is just on the Dutch side, within the framework of a 90-day test phase.

Currently the order of the administrative court has not yet been final; The DUH can appeal to the Lower Saxony Higher Administrative Court. The discourse on the permits and their influence on nature conservation remains tense and polarizes public opinion.
