Dangerous PFAS: Top children's seat devalued in the ÖAMTC test!
The current test of the Austrian automotive, motorcycle and touring clubs (ÖAMTC) caused a stir after the review of 19 different child seat models has been discovered. In a comprehensive analysis, security features, handling and pollutant content were examined. A total of ten seats received the grade "good", while nine were classified with "satisfactory". The devaluations were particularly striking due to environmental pollution that flowed into the evaluation of the models for the first time.
The test scenario includes realistic accident simulations that add up to 50 km/h in the frontal impact and 60 km/h in the side collision. These requirements correspond to the European security standards in accordance with the Euro NCAP. Particular attention is paid to the child seat "Anoris T2 I-Size" by Cybex, which was originally considered the best in the test, but was downgraded due to proven PfAS loads from "good" to "satisfactory".
pfas - a serious threat
PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are chemical compounds that are not biodegradable and accumulate both in the human body and in the environment. This group of fabric, which includes over 4,700 chemicals, is known for their use in products such as coffee cups and outdoor jackets because they have water, fat and dirt-repellent properties. The environmental effects of PFAS are often undisputed, and according to the Federal Environment Agency, the burden of children is alarming.
A current study shows that 100 % of the children have been tested, are contaminated with PFOs and 86 % of the blood plasma samples have Pfoa. High concentrations of these substances can cause health problems, including impairments in vaccinations and an increased risk of infections. It is also pointed out to the problem that breastfed children tend to be higher with PFAs than not breastfed.
advice for parents
In view of these results, the ÖAMTC parents advise you to find out more about the test results of child seats before making a purchase decision. It is recommended to ideally try the child seats in your own vehicle from a specialist dealer or at a ÖAMTC base in order to ensure optimal fit and safety. A simple online purchase is considered unsuitable because the assembly and adaptation can vary. The burden of PFAs and the need to limit the use of these chemicals in products are the focus of the current discussion. Dirk Messner, President of the Federal Environment Agency, demands an EU-wide ban on PFAS, since long-term environmental damage is often unexplored. Measures to reduce PFAS pollution are urgently required to protect the health of the following generations. Further information on the test results and the recommended child seats can be found on the ÖAMTC website.
