Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine: Despite great expectations!
Istanbul, Türkei - Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul ended after about two hours without any significant breakthrough. These conversations have been the first direct meeting for three years, but a Ukrainian insider was disappointed with the Russian proposals, which were described as unrealistic. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan opened the meeting that was broadcast live by the Turkish Foreign Ministry. Before the talks, extensive advice from Ukraine with the USA and Turkey as well as with high -ranking representatives from France, Great Britain and Germany took place.
No agreement was reached, which is considered unfortunate by those involved. According to the Ukrainian presidential advisor Mychajlo Podoljak, both sides now have to return to their capitals for further consultations. Details on the topics discussed have not been announced, but there is agreement that "certain decisions" have to be made. The priority for Ukraine remains a serious ceasefire, whereby the need for confidence -building measures was also emphasized.
outlook of the negotiations
The need for a real, permanent and well -monitored ceasefire was emphasized by insiders. Further steps include the return of Ukrainian children as well as the exchange of detained civilians and prisoners of war on the basis of "All against everyone". Despite the negotiations, the fighting continued to go unabated. The negotiating table is shaped by very different positions.
Russia calls for Ukraine's waiver of NATO accession and the recognition of the Crimea and the People's Republics Donetsk and Luhansk. This is opposed to the Ukrainian peace proposal, which includes a withdrawal of the Russian troops and security guarantees. The Ukrainian President Vladimir Selenskyj also determined goals in his ten-point peace plan, which affect the return of Ukrainian areas and nuclear security.
The meeting in Istanbul illustrates the challenges that the local and international actors face. While some progress is sought, the gap between the positions on both sides remains high, which makes a quick peace in the region a fragile goal. The international community observes the development in the hope that a diplomatic solution can be found before the situation is further intensified.
