Fire brigades Bad Ischl: Master course for water promotion successful!

On May 17, 2025, a practice -oriented training for water transport via long distances for fire brigade took place in Bad Ischl, Upper Austria. The event was led by HBI Herbert Landl and was used to prepare for the emergency services for the challenges that can occur in fires with high water requirements, such as forest fires or major fires. Such operations require a special strategy of water promotion, which is characterized by more intensive planning and more equipment, as is also being made on wikipedia.

The training was divided into three parts. The first part took place in the FF Pfandl tool house and conveyed theoretical basics for planning and calculating relay lines as well as for dealing with the physical conditions of water production. In the second part, realistic exercises were carried out in the Falkensteiner gravel pit. Here, important skills for problem solving in dealing with water conveyor systems were trained, supplemented by error simulations to test the reaction capacity of the fire brigade.

practical applications and challenges

A highlight of the training was to set up an impressive 1,300 meter long relay line, which led from the Ischl River via Auerbachweg into the Lindau. This measure previously ran unique in the region and included a height difference of 70 meters, with a conveying output of 1,000 liters per minute. The entire planning and development period for such measures is usually at least one hour, and the emergency services had to adapt to various pressure losses, which are due to the area and the hoses used, as fire brigade learning.

Special attention also applies to the necessary preparations, such as the determination of suitable extinguishing water withdrawals and the determination of pump distances. In addition, firefighters have to be trained to take the logistical planning into account as part of a commuting water supply. Each fire brigade must know its local objects and water withdrawal points in order to be able to act quickly and effectively in an emergency.

results and future prospects

A final feedback discussion in the FF Pfandl fire station helped reflect on the experience of training and clarify open questions. The positive response underlines the importance of such training measures to improve the operational readiness and to strengthen the cohesion of the fire brigades in the compulsory area of Bad Ischl. The combination of theory and practice is considered important to consolidate the skills of the emergency services in dealing with water promotion and to be well prepared in an emergency.

Overall, the training once again shows how important comprehensive planning and practical preparation in fire service are in order to meet the high requirements even with complex operations.
