Family from Germany in mountainous: 17 hours in the Tennengebirge!
Tennengebirge, Salzburg, Österreich - A dramatic mountain tour ended in an emergency Situation for a German family with three children in the Tennengebirge in Salzburg. On May 30, 2025, the parents and their children aged 8, 10 and 14 years from Ellmaualm (1,533 meters above sea level) went to the Söldenhütte (1,550 meters above sea level). The planned hike should take seven hours, but the weather conditions and the inadequate equipment led to serious difficulties.
Even before the departure, the parents were made aware of the danger by their hut owner. The latter warned them of poor equipment and old snow fields that could make the hike more difficult. However, the family was only equipped with trekking shoes for the parents and running shoes for the children. In addition, essential things such as rain equipment, headlamp and bivouac sack were missing, which can be important aids in an emergency.
alarm of mountain rescue
at 6 p.m. the father contacted the Söldenhütte by phone and promised to arrive around 8 p.m. But when there was no trace of the family at 9 p.m., the hut owner notified the mountain rescue. At 11 p.m. the father finally chose the emergency call because the family was in the area of the Tauernscharte (2,103 meters) and was in acute danger.
eleven mountain rescuers of the local office immediately made their way to the family. Around 3:15 p.m. they reached the group, which luckily was unharmed but hypothermic. The bad weather conditions with moisture and old snow fields had made the situation very difficult.
Important information on equipment
In view of the events, the mountain rescue emphasizes the importance of solid tour planning, taking weather and snow situation into account and the acceptance of advice from experienced hut managers. Before each mountain hike, careful checking and selecting the equipment is crucial for the safety of hikers. The basic equipment for each mountain tour should include the following:
- fixed hiking shoes with sufficient profile
- warm and rainproof clothing
- emergency equipment such as a first aid set and a mobile phone with replacement battery
- enough provisions, including warm drinks and snacks
- A bivouac bag for unexpected nights in nature
- Sun protection such as sunscreen, sunglasses and headgear
In addition, it is advisable to learn the handling of the material before each hike and prepare for the respective terrain and weather conditions. Hiking sticks can be particularly advantageous in rough terrain, while a mountaineering helmet offers protection in the risk of stone.
