Existence fear among farmers: worries about keeping pigs in Burgenland!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - On December 23, 2024, the Situation for the Austrian pork farmers remains tense and unsafe. The Constitutional Court (VfGH) surprisingly lifted the planned ban on the full column floor in pig farming for 2040, which leaves thousands of companies without legal clarity and planning security. According to the message of APA-OTS are now exposed to existential fears in stable buildings and conversions are uncertain conditions. This situation not only endangers the financial existence of the farmers, but also harbors the acute danger to domestic care with pork.

political negotiations and new proposals

The coalition partners ÖVP and the Greens have been negotiating a practical transition period for the ban on full column floors in pig farming since the beginning of 2024. The ÖVP chief negotiator Georg Strasser criticized the blockage keeping on the part of the Greens and appealed to the urgency to ensure legal security for investments. As can be seen from Bauernbund , Strasser called for an adaptation of the transition periods in a step model, which deals with differently, depending on the time of their investments. The VfGH recognized the need for a transition period, but criticized the flat -rate approach of the previous regulation.

Such a step model stipulates that the transition period for stables that were built before 2013 ends in 2036, while stables that were built after 2013 should be under recognized investment protection by 2040. Strasser also emphasized the relevance of the topic for consumers, since an inadequate transitional arrangement could endanger domestic production, which would ultimately lead to a decline in diversity and quality of the pork.
