Evacuation in Sumy: Ukraine fears great Russian attack!
Sumy, Ukraine - The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj announced today that eleven villages were evacuated in the Sumy region. This measure takes place in view of the threat of Russian bombing and the presence of more than 50,000 Russian soldiers in the region. Selenskyj also warned of an upcoming great offensive of the Russian armed forces. The decision to evacuate was announced on Saturday by the local administration after Russia had taken several towns in the nearby northeastern region in the past few weeks.
The Ukrainian Grenzschutzamt reported that Russia was willing to try an attack on Sumy. In the meantime, the Russian news agency Tass reported that the Sumy region had been "liberated". Russia has strengthened its focus on the Sumy border region, and in the past few days there have been reports on increased attacks after the Ukrainian army was driven out of the neighboring Russian region of Kursk. Russia is currently controlling about 20 percent of the entire Ukrainian area, and the war, which has been going on for over three years, demanded tens of thousands of dead on both sides.
diplomatic efforts
At the same time, the diplomatic efforts to end the war increase. A first direct meeting between Russian and Ukrainian representatives took place in Istanbul in mid -May. These conversations have been the first in three years and have so far not made any progress in the direction of a ceasefire. A second meeting in Istanbul is proposed for Monday, for which Kyiv has not yet agreed. The talks were resumed on the Russian initiative, as the Turkish government under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized.
Ukraine has not yet decided whether it will send a delegation to Istanbul. US President Donald Trump criticized both Selenskyj and Putin for their persistence in the failed negotiations for an armistice. The US Senate also plans to advise sanctions against Russia and state groups next week, import the Russian goods.
state of negotiations
Current reports indicate that both Ukraine and Russia see progress in the negotiations at the end of the war. A 15-point plan, which includes Russia's demands for neutrality and demilitarization of Ukraine and Kiev's demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops, is currently being discussed. However, these territorial issues should only be treated at a later date.
Ukrainian consultants have confirmed the existence of the plan, but emphasize that he mainly reflects Russian demands. Selenskyj describes the negotiating positions as more realistic, but demands patience and effort. While Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lawrow hopes for a possible compromise, Kiev makes it clear that neutrality according to Swedish model is not acceptable and that security guarantees are required by partners instead.
