EU scandals: Vilimsky denounces bribery and distraction from Hungary

In the European Parliament, a sharp criticism of the double standards of EU institutions became loud on May 22, 2025. In his speech, Harald Vilimsky, head of delegation of the freedoms, found that billions in deals and suspected bribery within the EU were largely ignored. Especially the current scandals, including the Pfizer-Skandal of 35 billion euros, the EU did not treat them sufficiently.

He emphasized that the EU would instead steer its focus on Hungary. Vilimsky presented specific scandals, such as the alleged bribery around the Chinese technology group Huawei in which members are said to have been broken. Belgian authorities have accused Huawei of illegal influence on political decision -makers, combined with serious allegations that the company is doing a "criminal organization" that has been working under the guise of lobbying since 2021.

criticism of the dark corruption situation

The Context This criticism can be found in a variety of corruption scandals that have shaken the EU. In December 2022, the Vice President of the EU Parliament, Eva Kaili, was arrested together with several suspects that are accused of forming a criminal association and corruption. Qatar also played an important role here, which apparently tried to gain political influence through bribery.

Vilimsky pointed out that the legitimacy of a state to defend itself against foreign influence on democratic elections should not come out of the focus of the EU. He questioned why Viktor Orbán, who has had a majority of his citizens behind him, would be attacked as hard, while serious cases of corruption in EU policy were only sparsely addressed. "I am convinced that Viktor Orbán will win the next election," said Vilimsky and underlined the course of his political agenda for future, freedom and peace.

reactions and reforms

The existing corruption problems have led to demands for reforms within the EU. The lobby regulation in spring 2023 was tightened in order to combat the ongoing influence of corruption. However, critics fear that the measures are not far -reaching enough. MPs who leave parliament may not be lobbyists for six months, but this is considered inadequate by many.

The Belgian authorities recently carried out 21 house searches in Belgium and Portugal and several arrests following the corruption investigations in connection with Huawei. This indicates that the EU is still working intensively on the investigation of the incidents and wants to defend itself against the growing influence of external actors.

In view of these developments, it becomes clear that both criticism of corruption and the disputes within the EU will be of great importance for future political disputes and election campaigns.
