Earthbar alarm on Euböa: strong vibrations to Athens noticeable!
On the north half of the Greek island of Euböa, several earthquakes occurred from Sunday. The strongest vibration reached a magnitude of 4.7, which was also noticeable in the capital, which was around 130 kilometers away. Greek seismologists carefully observe the situation and warn of other seismic activities. According to a mayor, more than 50 houses in the affected region were damaged. The earthquake events in this region are part of a complex seismic landscape that shapes Greece.
Efthymios Lekkas, President of the Greek Society for Earthquake and Seismology, predicts earthquakes with strengths between 4 and 5. Akis Tselentis, seismologist from the University of Athens, even appreciates a possible maximum value of 5.5 and advises the residents, especially of very old buildings. However, experts exclude a mega quake and find that the current earthquake stove in Euböa is in no connection with the strong quake of the strength 6.2 in April in Istanbul.
Current earthquake activities in Greece
On May 19, 2025, several other earthquakes were registered in Greece. Here are some of the most remarkable:
- 10:18 (GMT +3): 2.6 Magnitude, 109 km from the Kykladen, south of Greece
- 10:08 (GMT +3): 3.2 Magnitude, 43 km west of Kalymnos, Aegean Sea
- 09:18 (GMT +3): 2.7 Magnitude, 52 km northeast of Chania, Crete
- 06:07 (world time): 2.5 Magnitude, central Aegean Sea
The seismic energy of these events was estimated at around 4.2 x 10
insights into the seismological conditions
earthquakes in Greece are common, especially along the southern island arch. The movements of the continental plates are done in batches, which results in earthquakes with strengths of 5.0 and more. Historically speaking, earthquakes with catastrophic effects have been registered, such as quake in the 1956 Dodeanes with 7.8 magnitude and numerous fatalities.
On May 14, 2025, a strong earthquake with a thickness of 6.0 was registered at a depth of 74 km, 38 km southwest of Kárpathos. In the following days there were several aftershocks, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 4.1. This shows how sensitive the seismic balance is in the region and how quickly such situations can develop.
The persistent earthquake activities illustrate the risk of which people in Greece are exposed to, and the need to increase both structural measures and security protocols in order to minimize the consequences of such natural events. The developments continue to report exactly and the seismologists are in constant exchange.
